BKK is pretty cool. They let others drop an app off for you. (I sent my PA sometimes). They offer same day service for emergencies though it costs more than "regular" service.
If you offset an extra night's accommodation cost vs. the 500 baht you pay more for same day visa service it might still be a good idea to land in BKK, wake up early next morning, head to the embassy, pay 1350 baht for same day visa service. Take a walk/go shopping, return to the embassy around 15:30 to collect your visa and head to the airport for your positioning flight to RGN.
One thing to keep in mind is that Air Asia, the positioning flight weapon of choice for many, is relocating to the old Don Muang Airport in October 2012. This is no problem. Just sayin' don't get into a taxi in auto-pilot and ask to be taken to Suvarnabhumi
