With you being Silver you should have a good chance of being upgraded anyway without the need to know someone if WT is overbooked....who knows that might even go against you rather than for you.
It's also route dependant as well.....for instance being in a high J cabin aircraft on a popular holiday route during a quiet business travel period will mean more chance of you being upgraded.
