When I lived in the far corner of Europe with supply of goods problems, I used to do my bi-weekly grocery shopping in London. I used to regularly travel with 2-3 checked baggage with around 30-31kg each plus a cabin bag weighing about 11-12 kg and a laptop-bag sized handbag that probably weighed about 8-9 kg (with a laptop in it). Ice packs weigh quite a bit - I was buying fresh scallops, ducks etc that was particularly hard to get there, as well as pre-packaged meals for convenience, so the amount of ice packs I had to use were quite ridiculous. They probably took up at least 25% of the weight as it was a reasonably long trip (Band 4) and I wanted to make sure that nothing went off.
When I was checking in, I might have sounded like I was going away for the weekend as I was going back and forth to London a lot as well (not every trip involved grocery shopping as it was a lot of hassle packing things), but I sure had a lot of baggage.
The easy ones were loo paper etc but they were bulky.
Nowadays I may go non-grocery shopping and end up with a shocking amount of things, although I do non-shopping and short trips with hand luggage only.
I also used to do a lot of other shopping in London, buying shelves and other bits of small furniture and flying back with them.
When I am flying to Germany, I usual will have an empty or very light loaded suitcase as on the way back it will be loaded up with stuff to bring back to California. Like sauce mixes, costs 0.79 Euro or less in Germany, here they are $3 or more. Certain mustard? 1.29 Euro against $4.99 here. So we fill up one suitcase with stuff like that. It is good to have space in our house to store stuff for a year. Thanks BA for 3 suitcases per person at 32KG.
