When I was a kid - probably around 1980-ish, my older brother used to get free transatlantic flights (with only his hand luggage) with DHL, who at the time were only small (at least in the UK). It was cheaper for them to buy a passenger ticket and sit a volunteer in it than it was to buy cargo space.
