To take the LGW TPA works fine flying from London. It seems the OP is flying from FRA or DUS. Changing planes in London is a huge hassle. Weather-wise changing in ATL is probably better, though lines in immigration can be very loing. Unlikely though on Christmas day. In addition, DL has many flights to RSW so in case of a weather delay or mechanical, you have ways to get to your destination.
