For example, the following flights:
Monday August 27:
AC 153 YYZ-YVR 08:00-10:03
AC 544 YVR-LAS 11:25-14:04 (14:25-17:04 eastern time)

So to request the upgrade for the entire journey, I would need to make the request on Thursday August 23 at 14:25 eastern (11:25 pacific)?

Or if I only care about upgrading the YYZ-YVR segment, then I can make the request on Thursday August 23 at 08:00 eastern?

No problem. Since you're new too this, I'll add a little more detail to my post so it makes more sense. The J number you see refers to the number of business class seats that are currently available for sale, whereas the R number you see refers to the number of those J seats that can be acquired using eUpgrades. AC adds to the R number when they don't think they can sell the J seats normally, so the number fluctuates from route to route, over time and particularly just prior to the flight.

As gateguard0 has said, you can upgrade the YYZ-YVR flights independently at 8:00 am on Thursday and the go back later to do the YVR-LAS piece and it will fix the credits required such that you only pay what would be required for YYZ-LAS instead of YYZ-YVR plus YVR-LAS.

I would recommend doing individual segments as soon as you possibly can given your situation (one Elite and one non-status). If you end up with a LAS-YVR and no YVR-YYZ and you don't want to spend those points, you can always call in and have it reversed so long as your original fare class is still available (presumably it would be so long as you just upgraded, but this is sometimes a gamble--again, depends on route, loads and timing).

Good luck, and if you need anything else, let us know.
