My experience with LH premium check-in at JFK (over the past 5 years) has been excellent. There
is dedicated business class (and F, if you are a SEN or above) check-in, and priority security, and it is only about 100-150m from curb, to check-in, to security, to lounge. As
econprof said, "priority" security means only that you get a shorter waiting line before the TSA checks your flight credentials, but it helps.
The LH lounges (BUS/SEN/F) are immediately to your right as you clear the security scanners, and the JFK lounge staff is a pleasure to work with.
Curb-to-Gate, JFK is IME one of the best outstation departure experiences in the LH system.
(Arrival at JFK is often a completely different experience

, but the scope of the OP was check-in and security)
