While it is true I've seen more of this post- than pre-3/3, the same "regulations" still apply. The #1 thing is to get the plane out on time. Period. If there's plenty of time, and the GA doesn't have other things to do (or if the GA is on his/her game and willing to be proactive), then going back to pull pax out of Y can and does occur. But there are a lot of variables here, and we simply can't know what was going on in the case of the OP.
Here's a theory: Is it not possible the guy who got the last F seat was an actual paid F customer who showed up in between the time the computer kicked him out and the GA going to get OP? Would it really have been "better" to tell this paid F pax "sorry, you're 3 seconds late, no F for you" as opposed to overriding the computer?
To OP: As a general rule, I assume that the moment I board my odds of being upgraded go down no matter what the upgade list says. If you really want the seat, wait quietly at the gate untill the last possible second.
Your missing the MAIN point. The seat went out with it showing the OP in it. Sure, they skip around the line, don't pull from the back, etc. the reason I made a big deal about it is as far as UA is concerned, the OP got the upgrade. Far all we know the person sitting in that seat (under OP's name was a friend of the FA)
