I would spend a couple of days each for Auckland and Wellington, that means going something like this...

Auckland - Rotorua - Taupo - Napier - Wellington

Rotorua is only really worth 1 night. Taupo and Napier can be done with 1 night each, but probably 2, considering driving time.

What time of year will you be going?
