The way to look at it is this: Suppose the OP had an AA ticket from XXX to DFW to ORD and then an Avios ticket for travel on AA from ORD to YYY. The XXX-DFW-ORD trip goes pear-shaped, and AA rebooks the OP direct from DFW to YYY to avoid stranding him at ORD. I doubt that many would have the chutzpah to ask for a refund of the Avios for the ORD-YYY ticket.

What DL has done here is, in substance, no different - the OP should be thanking his lucky stars rather taking a technical view and demanding a refund (which, on a technical view, is not available).
