As the OP states, AA uses a domestic-configured aircraft (business class recliner seats with 42" pitch) on that route.
Other potential reasons:
- Corporate contracts
- Xenophobic/protectionist/close-minded customers
- Uninformed customers
- Lower price [see point 1, tours, groups, etc.]
- Travel agencies/agents get overrides/prizes etc. for selling one airline
And yes, AA and LA/LP don't have anti-trust immunization, so they CANNOT coordinate/collude on the route.
Why does AA fly MIA-LIM even though LP already serves the route, and not DFW-LIM? Obviously because it thinks it can make more money doing so (note: you need to keep in mind the overall optimization of fleet utilization when calculating this).
