Other potential reasons:
  1. Corporate contracts
  2. Xenophobic/protectionist/close-minded customers
  3. Uninformed customers
  4. Lower price [see point 1, tours, groups, etc.]
  5. Travel agencies/agents get overrides/prizes etc. for selling one airline

And yes, AA and LA/LP don't have anti-trust immunization, so they CANNOT coordinate/collude on the route.

Why does AA fly MIA-LIM even though LP already serves the route, and not DFW-LIM? Obviously because it thinks it can make more money doing so (note: you need to keep in mind the overall optimization of fleet utilization when calculating this).
