Of course, and TSA wouldn't deny that. What TSA has made clear is that there's no way the machine could malfunction in a manner that would cause harm to pax or TSOs (unlike, say, a medical device used to deliver radiation therapy, which has been known to fail and deliver massive, dangerous doses of radiation).

Absent outside verification of that claim, I'm skeptical. It's a moot point for me personally, because I can't assume and hold the position in the scanner. I hope for the TSOs who trust their management that the machines are safe. I wouldn't work around them (and at one time, I actually considered working for TSA).
