I've used VPN and china mobile sims, no problems. Using MyWi, and sharing with multiple devices, only issue is that sucks a lot of battery for the iphone.
I got my china mobile cards in advance with 3gsolutions.com.cn. They even delivered them in advance to my hotel for 4$ more. Already activated and paid for. for 30$ I had a card with 250 min calling, 200 texts, 1GB data delivered to my hotel. :-)
