As a former FO, I've taken the money deal once, and insisted on protected seats beyond the 'standby on the next flight'. The GA had no problem arranging that, but I still made it onto the next flight out, protection unneeded. That was for $200, and I didn't mind the extra 2 hours in the SC to get more work done.
