Have I misunderstood TCP?

Recently turned gold and having read a few threads here, I asked BAEC to "TCP" my booking and a friend's on the same flight, which are under separate PNRs. Friend is BA bronze.

I was under the impression this would bestow upon him the ability to move his seat at will, so we can select seats of our choice together.

What has actually happened is that his seat has been moved next to mine, but he remains unable to choose his own seat.

Phoned today to clarify and apparently that is all that TCPing achieves.

It's certainly better than nothing, but if better seats become available (as I expect - it's European Y), I will have to change my seat, then phone the BAEC line again to request that his seat is moved next to me - which can take 2 days apparently...

Have I been wrongly advised by the BAEC helpline?
