Not sure if it's true--again, I don't drink. But maybe others can comment who do.
We've had Brunello on a couple of occasions to Italy. With some very rare exceptions, that's about it for quality wine. Now, some of the others have ended up being quite good, but that was more happenstance on lower priced wine than targeting. As for liquor- not so much.
