No one said that the concept as such was laughable. What is laughable is lifelong membership in return for the type of spend/flights that get you to current status levels.

I happen to think lifelong status is economically very hard to make work for airlines and some past experiences have demonstrated the difficulties with it, but certainly to make it work it would require spend and commitment well in excess of anything currently applicable to the BAEC programme.
