If you are flying on an international itinerary, chances are you get a free checked bag anyway.
However, keep in mind you will be checking your bag with the carrier operating your
first flight. If that carrier is not DL, it won't do much good to wave your DL AmEx at them. And to answer your question, for your benefit to apply, you only need to have your AmEx linked to your SkyMiles account, and have your SkyMiles number on your reservation. You don't need to have purchased your ticket using your AmEx or through Delta directly.
