While I certainly agree with most posters who say you can have both seat and service today, if I had to pick, I'd Pan Am service over UA's seat any day of the week.
Many FTers insist they cannot possibly cross the Atlantic in a narrow-body aircraft, nor in anything short of a lie-flat seat. The classic Pan Am first class experience, on a 707 with 2+2 F seats approximating today's domestic F recline, would undoubtedly have killed them.
