Please turn off ipad/kindle readers......[Electronic Gadgets Argument Master thread]

Anyone else get a bit annoyed by this?

20 mins before landing and i have ipad on flight mode, happily reading my novel in iBooks....
Then asked to turn it off, as is person nearby reading kindle. Yet I can pick up a 'normal' book or paper and read until I have to exit the plane!

Could the safety guidelines possibly be updated for the modern era or is there a rational reason for this?..... I'm guessing it's to prevent distraction but it does seem a bit OTT.

Moderator note:

Based on the number of threads about electronic gadgets and mobile phone on board (or more specially switching them off or not during certain phases of flight) I think it's time there is a master thread on which people can argue to their heart's content.

The only rule is that it is done politely and courteously and within FlyerTalk rules.

Go right ahead and feel free to argue on this thread. Other thread on mobile phone/electronic gadget use may well be merged into this thread.
