Of course that could be a good thing as O+D is more valuable, but AA needs a true gateway on the east coast to operate these kind of routes.
MIA has connections to plenty of markets in the Americas. What it lacks domestic, it makes up for in international. And, contrary to popular belief, Latin Americans and Caribbean islanders do connect in the U.S. to transit to Europe in large numbers. And for a market as huge as Miami-Rome, the importance of connections is diminished.
Miami-Europe yield is nothing spectacular, but it's on par with Chicago and Boston. To some markets - like Zurich, Milan, London and Moscow - yield is excellent.
If AA does well in Miami-Barcelona, it can be very telling of how AA can do in smaller Miami-EU markets.
