Indeed a shocking waste. I went on a Lufthansa 747 800 recently, and the staff talked about her with more awe than their A380. The crew certainly saw it as the superior bird.

I often see the BA747-800 in Germany too (which seems a strange use of resources, since it's an overnight train journey for rail freight).
