If it were up to me, I say move them to Miami - Miami-Rome is a huge local market year-round - double the local market size of Miami-Barcelona, which AA flies daily, year-round; and Miami-Helsinki is a good-sized local market too (not too much smaller than Miami-Barcelona), albeit seasonal. AA seems to do well with Miami/New York-Europe; but Chicago-Europe is weak. And I don't think that's just an AA thing - all airlines seem to struggle in Chicago-Europe, even AF and AZ are not year-round anymore, nor is VS, and UA canned ORD-FCO very quickly.
