I am in CAN from time to time- you have three choices (in order of ease and time saving):
1) Take a non *A carrier- probably the easiest choice
2) Fly to HKG and take the through train- as you probably well know this will eat up 5 hours each way more or less from point to point (of course depending where you need to get to once you arrive in Guangzhou Train station)
3) Fly to PEK or PVG and take a transfer flight- PEK usually has much better connections although they are on CZ for the most frequency.
