At least DL didn't cancel the flight you were on. My mid-day DL flight from ATL-MCO was cancelled while in the process of pre-boarding. Every flight later in the day was virtually full and the best they did for me was to re-book me on a flight that was 8 hours later.

I really thought DL gave their medallions better service during IROPS. If your looking for something special, look elsewhere. My expectations have been lowered as a medallion - it's just part of the herd when push comes to shove.

If it's convenient for you, then go for it. I wouldn't go out of my way to strive for DL status.
