While boarding with AA especially on MD 80s the flight attendants in coach stand in the back and watch. Today the first boarding announcement did not occur into 1o min. Into boarding. I did not see the flight attendants greeting and when a person asked for helped the flight attend net refused and asked another passenger to help her. It makes me wondered she can operate an emergency exit door if needed.

In comparison Their LAN one world counterparts are placed strategically throughout the aisles greeting people, smiling, helping get luggage in, directing people to their seats, and even offering chocolate on some flights. They are really working. I also heard constant announcements from them.

The boarding procedures are stark between the two airlines with LAN crew working hard and making the process as friendly and efficient as possible. Could LAN provide training to AA flight attendants and crew to help improve their boarding. Other US airlines are not much better either.
Rarely do I fly anything but MD80s and while I've seen the situation you describe, more often than not I see one of the Y flight attendants standing (more like wedged in) behind 6E greeting and directing pax. It's one of my favorite seats so maybe that's why I notice it more.

I do also try to make eye contact with the F flight attendant as I board, smile and say hello. IMHO, a smile and a friendly hello never hurts.

Many times I've heard as part of the on-board announcement that if you are unable to stow the bag yourself it will need to be checked. I always thought flight attendants couldn't help stow the bag because they would most likely not be available to help the passenger retrieve the bag when they reached their destination.
