My employer flies me (or any employee) in First or Business on any sector above 3 hrs. Any sector below, you can pick your own flights in Y so long as its reasonable.. ie.. you want to leave at noon and the ticket is $500, but if you left at 11:30 the ticket was $200.

If the 8 AM ticket was $100 and the noon ticket $500, I would be allowed to book the noon.
Mine is lowest fare on preferred carrier.
