So it got me thinking last night: we know that the hotels are compensated by Marriott Rewards for award stays. Lots of us have, at one point or another, accidentally received a bill on an award stay (slipped under the door) that is actually the hotel's bill to Marriott corporate. We'll see a low room rate - perhaps that $93 that I saw in the e-receipt.
But now I'm wondering if the $56 was also intended for corporate. Does the hotel get more if they upgrade to a suite? Long before my Platinum days, I remember spending an extra 5,000 points per night to confirm upgrades in certain places. (In my Plat years, I just roll the dice and hope for an upgrade since I usually don't really need them badly.) Wondering if that generates a little more revenue for the hotel...and $56 would seem to be about right for that.
Total guess/hunch. Can't think of any other explanation.
