Absent any computer glitch, those absurdly low fares out there are absurdly low because the planes have empty seats. Take a route like DFW-STL. Those who wish to efficiently make the trip in the least amount of time will still opt for the non stops. The rest of us will continue to route through LAX-NRT-HKG-FRA-ORD-STL.
I believe the airline does like getting revenue. It's the airport staff that has to deal with the additional and sometimes demanding customers that express the dislike. I have met some AAgents that are very supportive in our efforts to give money to their company and are very helpful to make sure we stay within the rules of the promo. Then there are others that feel the extra work is not worth their effort and encourage you to go away. As long as the good/fun ones outnumber the PITAs I'll keep flying for fun.

In my early years, I spent time explaining the advantages of "creative routing" to maximize miles to get free tickets. There didn't seem to be much training as to "WHY" some people fly in those days.
