I read it in couple of forums here that the reason in this anomally due to the fact that the Ticket in US should include all the surcharges, while in Europe, the fuel charges, airport charges, seat charges, etc etc are on top of the published fare :-(

Indeed and there are many more similar examples.
It's not that long ago some US based posters were getting their knickers in a right twist saying the end of the low charges on US domestic redemptions using Avios was nigh.....now they can't get enough of them.
