At the gate, I just asked for the number to be changed. To complicate it further, I wanted the miles to go to my AA account. The lady at the gate added my AA number but the miles still went to my BA account (which was no big deal) suggesting my AA number went into the wrong field for miles earning.
So, if they change it at the lounge, you can double-check at the gate.
i believe its been posted before on here that there is some element of 'cross charging/balancing' going on between alliance partners - eg BA want to know how many cathay FF's enter their lounges and vice versa so they can charge cathay a proportion of costs associated with providing a lounge. NO doubt someone will find the thread i read this on (it was a while ago) or someone in the know will elaborate.
