I paid at check-in. The guy seemed genuinely surprised that I actually was going to pony up the $1000 for the upgrade. I tried bargaining but that didn't work, ha. He said it's usually $1200 but that day it was $1000.
I got miles based on my economy ticket. Maybe I could have brought it up and said something but I was on an AA codeshare flight and then I just forgot...
