I think the killer kicker part of this - call it what you may - is we're willing to pay the $ to sit next to each other and regardless of booking systems etc. BA won't see the added revenue if this can't be done systemically which is counter to being in business. Let alone how airlines love their fees nowadays. Waving good money that no one will accept. crazy!
