All of my friends in this neighbourhood are well-to-do born Shanghainese and it's supposedly one of the few areas that's stayed mostly local.
Daning is also one of the few places in town where you have broad dining options even without venturing outside (the interconnected shopping mall restaurant floor) Especially the Xinjiang style eatery there is rather good.
The novelty of the Bund wears down quickly in the punishing heat and humidity outside. The only occasion I really had a good time there was at a Christmas party of a European bank sometime back in 2008 with terrace views of the river.
Blue Frog is not that bad either at the end of the day...As all who are more familiar with Shanghai realities, like you, do realize.
