That whole story is a bunch of bull. I've dealt with various electronic locking systems including Onity systems and just having the property code that is referred to will not in itself open the door. There is a handheld device which comes with the lock system which actually sends specific commands to the lock such as reprogram it, open it, etc. Just sending the mentioned code back to the lock would do nothing.
I'll hazard a guess that you didn't bother to read the original article on Brocious' website. He didn't just send the site code back, he sent the 'open' opcode including the proper site code. The point of the article is that you can pretty much replicate the handheld device you mentioned using a simple microprocessor and code copy-paste capabilities.
On another note, if anyone would want to create one of these himself it can be done for much less than 50$..
