Myself, I've often wondered about the persistence of Shannon flights. Apparently there's enough demand from tourists and residents in western Ireland to have something like 4-5 nonstops to the States, so why not another flight from Chicago to Ireland's capital and most populous city?
For many years, Ireland provided access to DUB only if the carrier also served SNN. There used to be some more formal formula for that, although I don't know if that's still the case.
