UA set up a deal with EI when then didn't have the hardware to operate the routes directly themselves. The merger allows them to shift aircraft around to better meet demand. This is exactly the sort of thing that should come out of such a fleet redistribution.
Why not use a 752? It has the right mix of C/Y seats and it has the range for the route.
