Who knows? Chicago's got a huge Irish population, and given the current economic situation in Europe I imagine lots of Irish people are moving to the States at the moment but probably traveling back and forth a fair bit. Obviously I haven't done the numbers, but the route doesn't seem as far-fetched to me as you seem to think.

Myself, I've often wondered about the persistence of Shannon flights. Apparently there's enough demand from tourists and residents in western Ireland to have something like 4-5 nonstops to the States, so why not another flight from Chicago to Ireland's capital and most populous city?
