A hand luggage only holiday for me is doable but with the wife in tow.....impossible.
The good lady of the OP is only staying at LHR for one night, so it should honestly be quite OK with hand luggage only. Of course the rest of her luggage is to be checked though, so I'm talking about her LHR overnight only here.

I don't advocate ladies do hand luggage only for a trip length of over 3-4 days because it's too difficult for most of them (can be hard for me during winter too).

By the way my maximum luggage consists of shopping from the trip, not the stuff I'm taking on a trip.
I still do this occasionally, although I am no longer having to do grocery shopping by flight

And that was a lamp shade to be worn as a hat because I had nowhere to put them, as well as an actual hat if I remember correctly
