I think there are multiple passengers (ie use of "we" in the OP's post) which might provide more flexibility. One pax could check three bags through to YVR whereas the other pax checks one bag to LHR which is then rechecked the next day. I think some of Shefgabs troubles might have been as a single passenger trying to split baggage destinations.
