I can answer my own question - I found a Canadian 'deals' site with a thread on this very topic.
Most of the iPhone apps (and specifically VOIP, Whatsapp, the App store itself, many other apps) will not work at all while on the PC mobile Internet system....rendering this option useless for me...so I will stick with Fido.
