The big factor is you will not receive all of your elite benefits on United (upgradges, E+, etc), but will get your Start Alliance benefits such as free checked bags, priority boarding, etc.
Not exactly, be careful with that. OP is correct insofar as OW's general policy is mileage is according to marketing carrier, not operating carrier. That said, if both are in alliance, there's obviously no issue. But with United, if the flight is marketed by a non-partner but flown by a * partner, you'd get miles. With AA, if flight is marketed by a non-partner, even if it flown by a OW carrier, no miles will be awarded.
