So my question is can I claim those miles/segments with United to get some kind of status with them?

It's easy to earn Preferred-qualifying miles. Just buy a flight on US Airways or any of our airline partners.*
*The number of Preferred-qualifying miles you'll earn are based on actual miles, or on actual segments flown on qualifying paid tickets, whichever is greater. (There are certain discounted fares, like industry discounts, which don't count toward Preferred status.) However, if you're a Preferred member you will earn a 500 mile minimum per segment. Only miles earned on Star Alliance member airlines (and Virgin Atlantic) are Preferred-qualifying miles.
you'll earn Preferred qualifying miles on US. Credit the flights to them.
