For me, IDB means travel certificates, another night on vacation, and a bump to a full-Y fare for upgrades. For my friend, who is not a seasoned traveler and doesn't have SC access, getting stuck in MSP might be rather painful. Throw in the fact that he is on an award ticket and you have a situation where he could easily get stepped on.
One of the primary reasons I keep my status with DL is because of preferential treatment during IRROPS or VDB/IDB. I shudder every time one of my non-status friends reports getting stuck in an airport somewhere, so I'm trying to avoid that here.
That said, it might have been better to leave him out of the middle seat on his flight from SFO -- at worst, he would get stuck at home. Can't undo it now, though.
