This. Unless you really don't want to be bumped.

Or there is the gamer option, which is undoubtedly frowned upon by Delta. Book tickets for both of you, not just your friend. Get seated together up in EC. Split the PNRs. Redeposit your own ticket. Abusive and potentially fraudulent? Yep. But some people who feel the airline treats them that way have no qualms about doing it.
