Don't believe any well dressed Thai man that comes up to you and starts talking to you in English. In general, Thais are friendly BUT will not come up and start talking to strangers.
A couple of weeks ago the Tourist police were outside Wat Phra Kaew (and Wat Pho for that matter), they were warning tourists about the touts. Could be a rare occurence, since my sample size is pretty small.
Either way a little research goes a long way in protecting yourself against these types of scams.
