We were in Bangkok at the ntrance to the big temple. We were stopped by a guy that seemed like he was one of the staff. He said that the temple is closed for two hours for locals only. He directed us to a yuk tu hat will aid us to a trip in the city to pass the time. We ended up stuck with that tuk tuk for 3 hours and dragged to 6 stores and offered to buy jewelry and suits etc. when we got back to the temple we saw that we could go in any time. It ruind the temple visit because we were exhausted.
I was in Bangkok in late 2009. Three separate times in one morning I/we were approached and told that the place we wished to visit was "only open to Thai until X time. And, that we should go to Y location to get a cheaper ticket..." The individual who approached, of course, could arrange for transporation. Aware of the common scam, we declined. It happened twice when I was with a fellow FTer and once when I was by myself.
