We just finished a 3 night C+P stay here. Check-in was very happenstance and we were amazed how little 'service' the hotel would have to offer. We'd arrived at 11 AM and were told to wait until 4 PM as no rooms were available earlier. Never had that before as SPG Gold. Luckily after 20mins of waiting we were upgraded to a ADA one bedroom villa.
The Good:
- we felt it's THE choice in Hawaii for a family-friendly resort, our 5 year-olds loved the place and so did we
- it's pretty big but feels intimate and secluded, very well done
- villas are large (1200 sq ft?) and all the materials used have an excellent finishing
- we loved the nearby Hanalei beaches which are only 10 minutes by car
- very well equipped kitchen incl. days supply
The Bad:
- Wifi is 768k only to begin with (no paid upgrade) and at times of heavy usage horribly slow
- it just does not really feel like a 'resort' more like a very well kept timeshare place, which it is
- no free breakfast for Platinums as the hotel does not even serve breakfast except Sundays
- you do need a car as the beach is a steep climb away and there is not that much else to do without a serious hike
We also checked out the St. Regis and thought of it as a 'dump'. It looks like from a bad 70s movie. Very old, bad smells, cold - just like a hotel should not be (in our views at least). I would not pay $100 for it and they charge $650 (as per July 2012).
