Don't be so quick to reach this conclusion about weather-related delays...usually it is very chaotic at an airport when there is a weather problem. It is this chaos that you can point to when seeking compensation...and it often comes down to how you ask.
DL covered my stay at the Four Seasons, including round-trip private transportation, last year in DC on a weather-related overnight.
