Thanks everyone for the responses. I will try again in about two hours once I'm inside the 24 hour window.

FYI - this is for a paid ticket with upgrades (miles/money and GPUs) used for the overseas segments. The original agent was very worried about doing something that would impact the rest of my journey and due to my paranoia, i quickly agreed.
